Child support is a necessary requirement under both California and Federal laws. In California, support is determined by an algebraic formula, used to provide consistency throughout our state.
There are several factors used in determining guideline support, these factors include the number of children, gross income of the parents, what percentage of time each parent has custody of the child or children, your federal tax filing status, as well as various deductions such as union/association dues, other child support obligations, health insurance etc.
Although other bills are not priority over the support of children, certain hardships can be considered by the court.
Child support is applicable until your child turns 18 years old and graduates from high school, or if still a high school student until your child turns 19 years old. Certain factors, such as emancipation, entering the military, getting married, etc., may terminate child support earlier. Other factors, such as your child having a physical or mental disability may prolong child support.
